Guide to Home Washing

Introduction

Proper care and washing of home diapers helps extend product life and is essential for your child's hygiene. Soiled diapers should be stored in an airtight container (diaper pail) with an optional plastic liner. Most diaper pails have a built in location for a deodorizing disk. Diaper pails should be located away from heating vents and sunlight from windows. Diapers should be washed no more than 6-7 days after they become soiled. Hard formed stool should be dumped into the toilet after changing.

Recommended Washing Instructions

1) Soak diapers for 20-30 minutes in hot water in your washer. Do not soak your diapers in bleach.

2) Set your washer for a double wash and double rinse. Use hot water on all cycles.

3) Use soap in both washes and bleach^* in second wash only.

4) When second rinse is complete check diapers for stains. Do not dry stained diapers. This only sets the stain making it more difficult to remove.

5) Dry diapers on high heat (60-70 minutes) until completely dry.  Or line dry until dry to the touch then dry on high heat for 20 minutes to make sure interior of diaper is dry.

6) Stained diapers should be treated with liquid soap or stain remover and re-washed, possibly with a load of towels or whites.

7) Store clean diapers in a dry place.

* We recommend that you use a non-chlorine bleach since chlorine attacks cloth fibers, shortens fabric life and can be harmful to babies skin.  If chlorine bleach is used we recommend an extra rinse cycle.

Diaper Inserts and Diaper Doublers

Diaper inserts and doublers can extend diaper life and prevent diaper staining. Diaper inserts come in both cloth and paper and are placed inside the diaper next to baby's skin. They are available in both cloth and paper. Multi-layered diaper inserts that our available from the All Together Diaper Company are made from two layers of cotton flannel and an inner layer of poly-rayon. In addition to preventing diaper stains they provide extra absorbency for night time or naps. They are washed in the same manner prescribed for diapers above.
